Quick Update
We're leaving the house in about a half an hour to get the bus to Galicia. Unfortunately Desi won't be going with us just yet. She had a sore throat and a slight fever on Friday and the fever went up a bit on Saturday. Sat. evening her host mom took her to the doctor who gave her some antibiotics and demanded bed rest. She will stay in Madrid with her host family and Dr. Dunn until she is able to meet us on the Camino later this week. We'll miss her for a few days but just want her to be healthy. Thank goodness for Dr. Dunn.

I have been in communication with Desi and her host family as well as Dr. Dunn. I am glad to announce she is feeling much better. Desi's x-ray reveals a 'garden variety' viral/sinus infection or cold, albeit Spain's strain for which she lacked a certain immunity.
ReplyDeleteHer temperature is lowering closer to normal by the day and color is returning to her cheeks. Antibiotics and plenty of bed rest will no doubt bring my Desi back to her normal self and hopefully she and Dr. Dunn will rejoin the group by Tuesday. Thank you Dr. Dunn for being there!!
My sincere thanks also to her host parents, Antonia y Marité, for their quick actions in taking her to the hospital for a thorough check and their continuous care for my Desi. Words fall short in expressing by graditude; I know Dez is in good hands. Estoy muy agradable de su hospitalidad - Lalysbel
We are relieved to hear that Desi is feeling better. We are all pulling for her to get well enough so that she and Dr. Dunn can join the rest of the group prontissimo.

Nothing more to add re: Desi. Lalysbel said it all. I saw the gang off at the bus station -they look well and excited to be on the next leg of the journey. After visiting with Desi and her family for a bit, I spent a few hours in the city. The public transport is quite excellent. Signage is very clear. Everything is spotless. "El mundo" was out on the streets this afternoon, a day of sun with intermittent rain showers. I walked down the Carrera del San Jeronimo to the Plaza Canovas del Castillo. Took in the most interesting art collection at the Thyssen Bornemiszta. Collection by the Baroness of the same name - mostly artists from the 1800-1900s that I had never heard of but who paint similarly to the masters we know and love e.g. Gaughin, Manet, van Gogh, etc. When they closed, I slipped into the Museo del Prado for a quick look-around (free entrance during the last two hours on Sunday). I was so impressed by the many languages I heard in the museums and on the Metro.
ReplyDeleteI am staying out in Las Rozas with Ms.Molina´s friends, Arturo Martinez and Ana Steele. Out here, the terrain reminds me strongly of San Antonio, Texas - the big difference being there are mountains in the distance with snow on them. (BTW, flying into Madrid resembles the approach to San Diego, CA. Coincidence that these are places colonized by Spain?)
While wishing to keep the adult-only time private, I do have a fabulous video of Buddy and our hosts playing on the - I kid you not - geriatric playground at El Escorial. I will upload it to Teacher Tube, then add the URL to my comment here.
Will check on Desi tonight and tomorrow morning and we´ll take it from there. Ciao-bye.
Dr. D
Espero que te seintas mejor Desi.

ReplyDeleteDesi is better today. We may be on our way miercoles.
We´ve had a quick chat with the peregrinos this afternoon. They got to their first stopping point as planned. Hope to talk later tonight, get more details for you, and start setting a rendez-vous plan.
La doctora Dunn dice mas:
ReplyDeleteJust got off the phone with Ms. Molina. Sunday they had a great day in O Cebreiro. "It was like going back to the Middle Ages." They stayed in a hostel the first night and it was a good experiemce. Tonight, legs are sore. `
(End of transmission.)
Just wanted to say "Hi" to everyone and tell Desi that I was thinking about her. Hope she is feeling better and ready to enjoy the rest of the trip. The team misses you!

Working on the rendez-vous plan right now. Looks like an overnight train (with beds!!).
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile here is geriatrics at play part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZKK7pmA7gs

Hey Guys, it has been great to keep up-dated as to your trip! Loved the geriatric park! It sounds like you have all been enjoying a good mix of culture and the great outdoors. Ruth Ann, I was interested in your description of the terrain. Ryan, you would be proud to know that our advisory is hard at work at the latest challenge-- green up ideas. If you get this before Thursday, let me know if you can add to our (very long) list!
ReplyDeleteHasta luego,
Susan Rogers

ReplyDeleteHoy es miercoles. Vi Desi ayer y estuvo en salud excellente. (How´m I doin´so far, professores de español?)
Molina y S. Hayford para planificar el "rendez-vous" (hooray for run-on sentences and French).
Because of the expense of phone calls, I have not gotten much of a report. (I get passed the phone last and well...) I do know they had great weather yesterday and the only complaints are blisters and sore legs. Par for the course.
Desirée is so excited to rejoin the group en El Camino. She has recovered beautifully and is ready to hike! Tonight's train ride sounds awesome con camas (with beds), wow.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks to Desi's host family for everything. "They're sad to see her go" (I am quoting her 'host mom') "and she wants Dez to return to Spain and stay with them." I believe Desirée made some wonderful friends in Spain.
I couldn't have asked for a better host family for my Desi. Estoy muy agradecida por toda la alluda y cariño que le handado ha mi hija.
Happy hiking my sweet Desi!!! We love you, Mom & Dad
